Trois-Rivières, November 14, 2025 – Ambra Telecom (formerly ECOTEL), a Canadian cellular operator based in the Mauricie region, is proud to announce the deployment of an undersea fiber-optic cable between Trois-Rivières and Ste-Angèle-de-Laval, which was completed on November 7. This major project, which will be completed in the spring of 2026, marks a decisive step in strengthening connectivity and digital resilience for the South Shore and businesses in the Bécancour industrial park.
Essential redundancy for the region
Until now, the only fiber optic cable in the region crossing the St. Lawrence River ran over the Laviolette Bridge. In the event of an incident affecting this infrastructure, the risk of connectivity disruption weighed heavily on businesses and residents of the South Shore. Thanks to this new submarine link, Ambra Telecom (Ecotel) ensures full network redundancy, guaranteeing increased telecommunications reliability for the benefit of the rapidly growing communities and businesses in the Bécancour area.
A visionary project, 100% funded by Ambra Telecom
The result of more than a year and a half of work, including the permitting process and environmental studies, this ambitious project was entirely funded by Ecotel. This financial independence reflects the company’s confidence in the region’s economic vitality and its commitment to investing in a robust and sustainable digital future.
“We are extremely proud of our team, which has achieved this feat within a tight timeline. This connection is much more than just a cable: it is a symbol of innovation, perseverance, and commitment to connectivity for businesses on the South Shore” – Éric L’Heureux, President of Ambra Telecom (Ecotel).
Several engineering and environmental studies were conducted as part of this project. The strict standards set by Transport Canada were followed, and Ambra Telecom (Ecotel) enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with the Trois-Rivières Port Authority. The challenges were numerous, and this project could not have been completed without the cooperation of suppliers and subcontractors. Teltech Télécommunications was responsible for the land-based portion of the project, while MVC Océan handled the marine portion. The expertise of both companies was leveraged to carry out this large-scale deployment.
Innovation and Local Expertise
The submarine cable, over 4 km long and consisting of 144 optical fibers, was designed and deployed using the latest technologies, ensuring a lifespan of over 50 years. The expertise acquired by the Ambra Telecom team in the design and implementation of submarine infrastructure paves the way for new technological projects across Quebec.
